5 Star book REVIEW for “Benny Speaks Up”
Tracey Lyons Tozier brings readers a fun-filled tale with the first book in the Mama Bulldog Series, “Benny Speaks Up.”
Learn a lesson or two about standing up for yourself with Tracey Tozier's “Benny Speaks Up.” At breakfast, Benny, a puppy, is nervous about his upcoming math test. When Mama Bulldog asks him why, Benny answers that he has difficulties learning fractions because Mrs. Poodle talks too fast, and his special ed teacher, Miss Spaniel, hasn't been to class in weeks for extra lessons. Mama explains to Benny that he must advocate for himself and tell his teachers about his IEP (Individual Education Program).
All Benny needs to do is be assertive and respectfully remind Mrs. Poodle and school Counselor Greyhound about his needs. Now, it's time for Benny to go to school. He is determined to stand up for himself. But how will his teachers react? Will Benny be able to learn fractions? Benny Speaks Up is a fun-filled tale with an inspiring message about the importance of standing up for oneself.
Sometimes, even adults need reminders about their duties and responsibilities, especially about teaching special needs children. Tracey Tozier highlights this vital issue with engaging dialogue between Benny and Mama Bulldog. The interactions between the two are informative yet humorous. This makes for an entertaining tale that is not only educational but also fun to read.
With the Mama Bulldog Book Series, as a whole, Tozier shows a mastery of this storytelling style that makes these picture books perfect for young readers. I have become a fan of this series and heartily recommend it to parents to read to their young children.
5 Star book REVIEW for “fiona finds what’s fair”
Tracey Lyons Tozier brings readers a heartwarming tale with this second book in the Mama Bulldog Series, featuring vibrant illustrations by Jenifer Novak.
“Fiona Finds What's Fair” by Tracey Lyons Tozier is the story of an adorable little puppy named Fiona. Fiona is excited to start sixth grade. However, Principal Hardly is refusing to continue with Fiona's 504 plan that helps with her dyslexia and dysgraphia, much to the chagrin of Fiona's Mama. Mama takes up the issue with Mr. Walkies at the District Office, and both agree on Fiona taking a test with the school psychologist.
Meanwhile, Fiona and her best friend Abbie, who has ADHD, need extra help, and the teachers agree to let them take tests in a quiet room that helps with their respective learning disabilities. But when a student in the history class points out it's not fair, Fiona must make everyone understand why being fair means everyone gets what they need.
Author Tracey Lyons Tozier always incorporates relevant social issues into her stories in an entertaining manner that even young readers can engage with and understand. And Fiona Finds What's Fair is no different. This delightful children's story is about two little puppies who suffer from learning disabilities and the challenges they must overcome with the help of supportive parents and teachers.
Readers will love these characters. I found the friendship between Fiona and Abbie adorable and was rooting for Mama Bulldog as she fought on behalf of her daughter's education and rights. Illustrator Jenifer Novak's vibrant artwork perfectly complements Tozier's storytelling. The message about fairness and its true meaning is beautifully woven into the story. This picture book will warm the hearts of kids and adults alike.

BOOK REVIEWS:
5 Star book REVIEW for “mikey can’t help it”
Tracey Lyons Tozier brings readers a heartwarming tale with this children's picture book featuring lively illustrations by Jenifer Novak Landers.
“Mikey Can't Help It!” follows a young puppy named Mikey who isn't like his siblings, Fiona and Benny. He acts differently and often memorizes and repeats every word he sees on TV or even what the rest of the family would say.
Sometimes, Mikey would flap his paws and throw a tantrum out of nowhere. Other times, he would hug strangers. When their parents take Mikey to a specialist named Dr. Ann Maree, she diagnoses Mikey with autism, and she teaches the family how to take care of Mikey and treat him in a way he can understand.
Will Fiona and Benny learn to take care of their little brother?
Children with special needs have unique behavioral patterns, and family members must understand how to attend to their needs. This message is beautifully woven into this uplifting tale of an adorable puppy – “Mikey Can't Help It! “
Tracey Lyons Tozier layers the narrative with humor and drama to engage readers and ensure they realize the importance of patience, understanding, and kindness when around classmates or family members on the autism spectrum.
The illustrations by Jenifer Novak Landers splash color onto the pages and make the characters shine. I was particularly impressed with the facial expressions of the characters. Mikey, Fiona, and Benny feel like real siblings, and I found their dynamic really charming.
All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and highly recommend it to children and their parents alike!
